Our Region: We are part of the Intracoastal Waterway (ICW). Officially, it runs from the Annisquam River in Cape Ann, Massachusetts, at the southern end of the Gulf of Maine, all the way down the East Coast and across the Gulf Coast to Brownsville, Texas, at the border with Mexico. It provides a protected route for vessels that otherwise travel on exposed bodies of water. Much of the ICW offers only limited protection since it includes open water such as Massachusetts Bay, Buzzards Bay, Block Island Sound, Long Island Sound, Delaware Bay and Chesapeake Bay. We do see many southbound boats in early Fall and northbound boats in the Spring. To many, the harbors of Buzzards Bay, Martha's Vineyard Sound and Nantucket Sound are destinations or turning points to a cruise. The area has exceptional beauty, great sailing conditions and fun ports of call during the summer months. The Hudson River opens up the interior of the northern United States and Canada, with many lakes and rivers, via the Erie and Champlain Canals.
