Cross Country Adventure 2022 (day 16)

West Glacier KOA campground, Glacier National Park, Montana

Heaven's Peak

Marc-  We changed our plans for today based on our neighbors having visited an area we had written off.  The Many Glacier section of the park is difficult to reach but our neighbors highlighted that they had seen much wildlife there including grizzly bear, deer, moose and fox.  That sold us on the idea since we had planned staying local and were not likely to see any wildlife.  We once again took the Going to the Sun Road to cross the park and then headed North on local roads to the Many Glacier Park Entrance on the East side of the Park.  Travel through the Going to the Sun road was once again spectacular but a bit unnerving due to heavy traffic at the narrowest and highest parts of the road.  Not to mention the cliffs with the 1-2 foot "high" walls or no walls at all and 1000 foot cliffs!

We were disappointed when we were turned away on arrival at the Many Glacier Park Entrance since all parking areas were full.  The Ranger suggested that we come back several hours later.  We went to lunch.  Fortunately for us at lunch I overheard someone at the table nearby indicate that he had just received a text that the park had reopened.  The scenery was spectacular at Many Glacier although we never did hike to a glacier.  We hiked around the local lakes and enjoyed the mountain views.  There were no wildlife to be seen.

After visiting the two lodges in the area we returned to the Going to the Sun Road. Sue spotted a large mountain goat just relaxing on a rock near the road (he seemed to be enjoying all of the attention he was getting).  After we got through Logan Pass Sue started spotting more mountain goats on the hillside and even blocking the road.  We parked and took plenty of photos with great shots of a baby goat and its parents.

Our last few stops were at a waterfall and finally at the Lake McDonald Lodge.  Both were great stops and this Lodge rates first honors at Glacier for quality and location.
