CODA : More meandering in Georgia's waterways
Jekyll Harbor Marina, Jekyll Island State Park, Georgia
Marc- I had my doubts that we would make it here today. Howling 20-25 knot winds, contrary currents, and getting starter at 11:00 did not help matters. The late departure was necessary in order to pass the "Little Mud River" and finally "Jekyll Creek" at mid-tide or greater. We were able to use the wind to our advantage sailing at ever opportunity. Unfortunately the waterways tended to turn back on themselves in spots as we zigzagged down the coast so wind was of no use at times. We also hit the Little Mud River stretch behind a sailboat from Minnesota that would not raise its sails and putt putted along. They did not run aground and neither did we. We did pass them as soon as possible and our speed jumped from 6 knots to 8.1 knots. In any case we arrived at 16:20 well before the 17:00 closing time.
Our first mission was to get some exercise. The marina has a dozen new bikes to lend out. We took off with two of them and made our way by bike path to the historic village. The place is fantastic with old time shops and the gilded age "cottages" and unbelievable clubhouse. The no-see-um bugs were out so we kept on moving without a single bite.
