Claytor Lake State Park
Dublin, Virginia
Clayton Lake State Park lies in the foothills of the Blue Ridge Mountains.
Marc- We drove North on Route 77 from Columbia, SC through part of NC to arrive in Dublin, Virginia at this beautiful park. This route was under construction and heavily used by large trucks making for a slow ride. We crossed the Blue Ridge Mountains at Fancy Gap, Virginia. The rapid change of elevation from North Carolina to Virginia slowed the trucks considerably. Our Duramax diesel just powered through it all (lowering our mileage considerably). Once over the mountains the area became rolling hills of farmland with grazing cattle and beginning-to-green-up fields.
Approaching the Blue Ridge Mountains
(looks a bit like Vermont).
Two of many attorney advertising signs polluting the roads of South Carolina.
We also noticed that most of the television advertising is attorney advertising.
Sue- South Carolina has SO MANY lawyer ads on TV and on billboards. They are everywhere, and constant. They all say "Dan got me $500,000, or George got me $1,500,000 for my case." It's a bit much, and I think it ultimately creates a culture of entitlement.
The Park Visitors Center (aka Howe House).
The Park and the Visitors Center were once part of a 2000 acre cattle farm operated by the Howe family. Clayton Lake was once the free flowing New River before the creation of a dam.
Entry foyer of the Howe house.

Nearby Park beach.
Deer near our campground entrance road.
Marc- We made two attempts to visit quilt shops today. Only the stop in Elkin, NC at the Yadkin Valley Quilt shop was successful. The first shop had no parking available for our rather long rig (truck plus camper trailer).
Two very colorful quilts from Yadkin. I really like this one!
Remarkable color transition.
Sue - Today was our first aborted attempt at visiting a quilt shop. There was not a parking lot near enough for me to jump out to visit the store. I sprained my ankle 2 days ago and I'm not getting around very quickly. But I am moving a little. The ankle did not swell so it is minor-ish.
The Yadkin Quilt store was different than most, per its owner. There wasn't a lot of fabric. Rather, they are commissioned to make quilts for people. And they teach classes. A couple own the place. She makes the quilts and he does the long arm quilting. They had books, patterns and some kits. I bought a book and a pattern.
