Entering Marathon Harbor

Marc-  Wind was favorable today at 15-20 knots out of the ENE and full sunshine. We pulled up the anchor at 08:00, set the genoa and headed over to Steamboat Channel that reportedly had 4 feet at low tide.  We went through 2 hours before low tide and saw 4 feet on the depth finder.  Maybe the keel just plowed through the soft mud.  This exact process was repeated at the next pass, called Bowlegs Cut.  The difference here was seeing exposed sand bars with birds as we passed through.  Michael took the lead through both of these shallow areas to give us advance warning of depth issues.  As we approached the Channel 5 Bridge we diverted from Michael's route to the Gulf side of Marathon where his marina is located.  We passed under the high route 1 bridge and through the open section of the old Flagler railroad bridge (it resembles a Roman aqueduct).  We then proceeded to the Atlantic side of the Keys but stayed within the Hawk Channel with its protective reef.  The wind remained favorable and we had following seas of 4 feet.  This side of the Keys has more hotels and fewer mangroves facing the passage.  We rounded the Western tip of Marathon and really felt the power of the wind as we reefed our 150% genoa.  We next lined up with the harbor entry channel and the opening where there once was a drawbridge.  Roy, our marina manager, gave us detailed instructions for finding the marina through this very busy and confusing harbor.  We arrived at our slip and docked without difficulty.  The locals are friendly here (at least those people on our neighboring boats).
