Cross Country adventure 2022 (day 4)

 Kennebec, South Dakota campground

18 July 2022.

Dignity statue on a bluff in Chamberlain, South Dakota overlooking the Missouri River and the
home of the Lakota Sioux.

Marc-  We were on the road before 08:00 this morning on our way from Rochester, MN to Kennebec, SD.  Our first stop was in Blue Earth, MN for "low cost" fuel and a visit with the Jolly Green Giant.  We passed miles and miles of cornfields and soybean fields.  There were 100 miles of wind turbines and large electric poles until we crossed the Missouri River.  We appreciated the lower cost fuel but the 20 knot winds on the nose did not help our mileage.  We were not able to take advantage of South Dakota's 80 mph speed limit with the trailer.

The landscape changed abruptly after crossing the wide Missouri.  We stopped in Chamberlain for a view of the 50 foot Dignity Statue.  We were greeted by 100 degrees of dry heat (only 30% humidity).  Later the temperature rose to 105 degrees as we crossed over rolling hills and fields of oats.

We arrived at our campsite relatively early, set up, then went back to explore Chamberlain and up the Missouri River.  Our first stop was at the Lakota Indian Museum at the St. Joseph's School in Chamberlain.  The Museum and School are impressive and thriving.  Then we drove North on the East side of the Missouri River to the large Army Corps of Engineers "Big Bend Dam" at Lake Sharpe.

The town decided to put up statue that would get people to stop.  It worked.
