Biking adventure on Hilton Head Island...

  7 March 2022

Hunting Island State Park Campground, Hunting Island, South Carolina

Marc-  This morning we headed South to Hilton Head Island to do some bike riding while exploring a new island.  We had passed Hilton Head Island twice aboard Lucy III on our boat trip and it looked nice.  My research revealed that the best bike paths are in the Sea Pines.  An entry fee of $9 is charged for access to this gated part of the Island.  We had no problem getting through the main gate and went to Harbortown village to park.  This village is centered on a marina and a lighthouse.  My first impression was that this was "fake" when in fact we saw the historical lighthouse keeper's house and out buildings still existing (now being used as a cafe and bakery).  We ate lunch at an outdoor restaurant under a live oak just off the harbor.

I reviewed the bike path map and decided a good trip would include visiting South Beach and its village.  The paths were excellent and almost exclusively in the shade and far enough away from the streets to be comfortable. The homes were beautiful and large.  South Beach was impressive for watching the waves wrap around the tip of the island.  The white sands stretched far away from the dunes at low tide.  We walked around the village and marina that was active in the early afternoon.  The Salty Dog Cafe was especially busy.  After seeing a few shops we headed back.

The sea is taking back some land.

Even the mighty live oak trees cannot resist the sea.
