Heading out for Huntington Beach State Park...

8-12 March 2022

Huntington Beach State Park, Murrells Inlet, SC

Marc-  We did one last hike on Hunting Island before traveling North for three hours to Huntington Beach State Park.  The trail led us to one big alligator covered in duckweed out in the sun to warm itself.  We never saw it move.  I found a few shells and a sand dollar on the beach.  The drive North was interesting for seeing the giant International Pulp and Paper mill in Georgetown, then for passing through the busy port facilities around Charleston (there were long lines of tractor trailers heading for the container terminals).  It was an easy drive on Route 17 once past Charleston.  Our campsite is tucked away on the outer ring of sites in the pine and live oaks.  After lunch we headed out on the trails and beach. The vegetation is different here with more live oaks, fewer pines and much less saw palmetto underbrush.
