Rock Island Dam on the Columbia River.
Marc- We departed Missoula Montana at 07:45. We traveled up into the Rocky Mountains and passed through part of Idaho and much of Washington, The terrain made dramatic changes from grasslands to mountains to grasslands then again to mountains. We followed the Lewis & Clark Route much of the day following the various rivers and passing though narrow valleys and mountain passes. The descent from the upper elevations was really cool passing through rather dense pine forest down to verdant farmland and then to irrigated farmland. The farms West of Spokane all rely heavily on irrigation for crops of any sort. All of the water is provided by the great western rivers such as the Snake and Columbia rivers. At Quincy we left Route 90 and headed North on Route 28 following the Columbia River upstream. The farms here grow a wide variety of crops including corn, potatoes, onions, alfalfa, timothy and many different fruits, Mile after mile of apple orchards, cherry orchards, peaches and others. We crossed the Colombia above Wenatchee and proceeded up into the Cascade Mountains to Leavenworth.
This section of Idaho is all mountains until you get to Coeur D'Alene and its magnificent lake.
Wheat fields above the sagebrush for 100 miles after passing Spokane. I expected to see a tumbleweed or two roll by in front of us. We observed several "dust bunnies" that looked like mini tornadoes swirling around.
Orchards started to appear as we approached the Columbia River.
Grapes.
Extensive nets covering a cherry orchard.
Notice the dry hillsides where no irrigation is present.
Ascending the Cascades. Lots of current in this river (glacial runoff).
