4 March 2023, Southern Camping Trip Day 58

 Jekyll Island Campground

Jekyll Island State Park

Jekyll Island, Georgia

Great sand sculpture.

Marc-  Our exploration was mostly by bike and began at the Jekyll Island Historic District.  We arrived to watch some professional grade croquet on the front lawn of the Jekyll Island Club Resort Clubhouse.  This is where everyone staying in the historic village has their meals.  This was the way beginning back when the cottages were built, because the so-called cottages were not equipped with kitchens.  We noticed a commercial fishing boat at the resort pier (perhaps delivering fish for the various restaurants here).  We stopped in a few shops looking for postcards.  Then we returned to the Island Marina where we had stayed with the Lucy III in 2020.  While on the docks we ran into one of the dock staff who we met in 2020, who remembered us when we visited last year, and still claimed to remember us, and we also met a fellow working on his Tartan 34C sailboat. I traded notes with him and shared our blog site.

We biked over to the Beach Village (where all of the new hotels, shops, markets and restaurants are located).  This area is just behind the dunes from the Atlantic beaches.  The dunes are quite large and provide a serious amount of protection.  Our next find was the 3 golf courses and one mini golf.  I made reservations for tennis for us on one of thirteen clay courts on Monday.  Unfortunately there is a competition this weekend so nothing is available.  Sue had prepared lunch for us to have on the ride and it was great except for the no-see-um biting bugs that came out of the marshes near our picnic site.  There are no bugs on the Atlantic beach side.

After dinner we drove over to driftwood beach.  This place is awesome.  A smooth white sand beach with incredible amounts of old oak trees scattered about.  Driftwood may not be the correct term here since the trees originally grew here before the ocean invaded.  There was one very well organized wedding proposal on the beach this evening and many people attended. Finally we attended Mass at St. Francis Xavier Church which is also home to an Episcopal congregation and a United Methodist congregation.

Croquet anyone?

This Cardinal is one of 24 different birds that we heard during the first hour of our travels today.

Jekyll Island really is a haven for birds.
