Cypress Trail Campground
Fort Myers, Florida
Marc- We explored South to Bonita Springs and its barrier beaches with its connecting roadway to further islands. We found a great spot to sit on a wall in the shade of some Mangrove trees to have lunch. The waters here are very clean and the colors in many shades of blue. The fishing is good as well. One fishing boat pulled up next to us and and lowered two hydraulic arms over the stern to anchor the boat about one foot from a concrete wall. The fisherman needed a quiet spot to clean the fish.
Most of the developed barrier islands (half are state parks) saw damage from hurricane Ian. The beachfront homes in Bonita were mostly massive concrete castles that did not suffer much. All of the smaller wood framed structures were heavily damaged. The undeveloped islands looked fine.
We did a little walking at Cypress Cove with our friend Roberta, and then we all went out to eat at the Clam Bake, a restaurant owned and run by Rhode Island natives. The food was really really good. We just happened to go on a Wednesday, which is "Rhode Island Night." That meant they had clam chowder that was broth based, not cream. It was delicious. Roberta had fried clam strips, Sue had fried whole clams, and I had fried oysters. Then we went to Dairy Queen. Oh my.
