16 February 2023, Southern Camping Trip Day 42

Clearwater / Tarpon Springs KOA

Tarpon Springs, Florida

Note the Sponge diving boat on the Town emblem.

Marc-  We moved North 3 hours today to a very nice campground in Tarpon Springs.  The town is built around the Gulf of Mexico and the Anclote River.  It is famous for being the sponge capitol of the world.  They do commercial harvesting of natural sponges that grow in the Waters of the Gulf of Mexico just off the coast of Tarpon Springs.  The Town itself is centered along the banks of the Anclote River that is spring fed.  Greek immigrants settled here in the early 1900's and focused on sponge harvesting and fishing.  The tradition lives on.  The town has many Greek restaurants and shops.  I bought a sponge and even negotiated the price on the sidewalk.

Very durable natural sponge for Mindy.

Statue of the sponge diver.

We enjoyed walking around the town viewing victorian homes, beautiful beaches and even going to a Greek bakery for my birthday "cake".

There must be some Irish influence here.

Perhaps some Canadian influence as well.

Long leaf pine.

Laughing gull.(having a good time).

On the drive up to Tarpon Springs we crossed Tampa Bay taking the "Sky Bridge".  We stopped over at a rest area 1/3 of the way across the Bay and saw a very interesting looking shell and a dolphin fishing.  Water colors were beautiful.

This welk shell looks like Aladdin's magic lamp.

Sky Bridge over Tampa Bay (center span is 1200 feet wide and has 180 feet vertical clearance).
