Sailing South aboard Lucy III: 2020-2021 (Day 37)

Dowry Creek Marina, Belhaven, North Carolina. October 10, 2020

Marc-  We fled the bugs of Alligator River Marina early (07:30).  Just as we backed out from our slips we heard a sailboat request an opening of the Alligator River Bridge.  Michael responded to the Bridge attendant on VHF Channel 13 and informed him that two additional boats were just leaving the marina and would also need an opening.  Unfortunately we could not travel fast enough to meet up for the first opening.  This was fine since the bridge attendant reopened the bridge 15 minutes later for us.  After passing through I set the throttle to give us 6 knots of speed despite having wind on the nose of 10 knots.  Seas were not a problem.  The next 7 hours were spent doing the entire Alligator River, the Alligator-Pungo Canal, and then the Pungo Creek to the Dowry Creek Marina all at the same speed.  The engine temperature rose to 175 degrees and then stayed there until the end.  Normally it runs at 145 degrees.  I wonder if this is due to warmer water?

Nothing but trees and grey skies today.  We saw two hawks and a crow in the canal.  The Waterway Guide says there are bear, deer and maybe a rare alligator here, but we did not see any such thing.  We did see three deer near the marina on our way back from a shopping trip.  The Dowry Creek Marina is great.  Excellent staff and up to date facilities.  They lent us a Mercedes Benz sedan to go shopping.  We met some really nice people in town while we waited for our take out dinner at the Fish Hooks Cafe.

We are at Mile 132 on the Intracoastal.  Our destination is Mile 777, aka St. Augustine, FL.

This is crab country.

We enjoyed some excellent takeout here.
