Sailing South aboard Lucy III: 2020-2021 (Day 36)

Alligator River Marina, Columbia, North Carolina. October 9, 2020.

We were up at 6:30 and free from the dock by 07:20 in order to make the 07:30 bridge opening at Elizabeth City.  It is really two highway bridges that open rapidly when needed.  Once through the bridges we noticed only two boats at the downtown docks and one boat that had left just before we arrived.  It was flat calm and the sun was still coming low on the Eastern horizon and we were headed East of ourse.  The trip across Albemarle Sound was uneventful.  We motor sailed in light winds all the was to the Alligator River Bridge then turned right for the Marina entrance.  As we pulled into the fuel dock we were met by hundreds (perhaps thousands) of midges. Screens up! Midges are look like mosquitos but do not bite.  This is our first real encounter with bugs.  After filling our gas tank we moved over to a slip across the harbor with many fewer midges.  Sue and I later installed the noseeum cockpit enclosure screen (it is like a bed mosquito net but for the boat cockpit).  We ordered crab cakes and sweet potato fries for lunch. The crab meat could not be any fresher since this is a fishing port with a large number of small crab fishing boats.

Sue has been knitting wool mittens.  Now they need to be boiled to shrink down to normal size.  Since the photo was taken the thumbs have been completed.
