Hampton, Virginia. Salt Ponds Marina and Resort. October 4, 2020
Marc- Today was almost a repeat of yesterday as far wind and waves on the Chesapeake Bay are concerned. We raised the anchor complete with thick gooey black mud from Jackson Creek at 08:00. Off we went down a quiet and calm creek only to find a wild bay that we motorsailed in for the next 5 hours. We were not alone out there as several other sailors headed South as well and a few motorboats. Two cruisers fought their way Northbound splashing lots of spray as their bows plunged into the waves. It was pretty much misery, but the good news is that we are at end of the Chesapeake Bay and about to begin the Intracoastal Waterway (ICW). The wind and waves slackened a bit by the time we arrived in Hampton and the small inlet to Salt Ponds. The channel is well marked and the Marina manager reassured us that it had been dredged to 8 feet. We saw depths of 6.2 to 7 feet one hour before high tide. We were surprised (and reassured) to find so many large boats, both sail and power, here. The marina is located right behind a beautiful barrier beach. It's a very nice and a well kept secret.
