Sailing South aboard Lucy III: 2020-2021 (Day 40)

Sanitary Restaurant Dock, Morehead City, North Carolina. October 13, 2020

Marc-  Today was fun since we had some favorable currents for most of the trip (Adams Creek) and favorable wind (Northwest).  We left River Dunes Marina at 08:30 and headed up the Neuse River.  The Northeast wind picked up our speed by two knots.  I expected us to slow down once we turned Southeast into Adams Creek and was surprised when our speed kept increasing until just North of Beaufort.  The incoming tidal current reversed our advantage now slowing us to about 5 knots. There were some beautiful homes in Adams Creek and a large shrimp fishing operation.  We came to a roadblock so to speak when a 100 foot Shrimp boat came up Adams Creek with her outriggers horizontal in order to fit under the Core Creek Bridge.  All other boat traffic stopped by the side of the channel to let him pass.  As soon as he passed the bridge his outriggers came up and we proceeded.  The next excitement was seeing dolphins swimming near the boat as we approached Beaufort.  We passed the Morehead City Beaufort highway and railroad bridges and entered a busy commercial port for the next mile.  After the last pier we entered the creek to the South side of Morehead City and anchored off of the Town docks.  We passed Mile 200 of the ICW today.  We later discovered that we could tie up at the Sanitary Restaurant Dock at low cost if having dinner there, so we did,

Crowded waterways:  look carefully at that shrimp boat.  He had just raised his outriggers.
