3 March 2023, Southern Camping Trip Day 57

Jekyll Island Campground

Jekyll Island State Park

Jekyll Island, Georgia

Marc-  We spent three hours driving to Jekyll Island.  Traffic was a bit crazy on Route 95 in Florida with drivers passing on the right and aggressive drivers on the on ramps.  Everything calmed down once we reached Georgia.  The entry on to the island is easy.  First you pass the enormous Brunswick car carrier ship terminal and the main port of entry for Jaguar, Land Rover, Porsche, Mitsubishi and Volvo.  These automobiles are mainly transferred to specialized rail cars and shipped out by rail.  Once past the port facility you reach the gates of the Jekyll Island Causeway and drive 6 miles to the Intracoastal Waterway bridge to the island. Just before this bridge is a toll booth ($ 8.00).  The salt marshes in this area seem to go on forever.  We were welcomed at the campground and assisted in finding our site.  Nice place with two sets of Canadian neighbors and one from Upstate New York (who has sailed on Lake Champlain).  Unfortunately we failed to stop for groceries before coming to the island.  Fortunately the toll is per day and allows multiple entries, so we went off island to a Winn- Dixie.  After dinner we spent some time on our bikes exploring the northern end of the island.

The gateway to Jekyll Island.

Our campsite in the tall pine trees.

This is the bridge to Brunswick and the Winn-Dixie supermarket.

The Sidney Lanier Suspension bridge (486 feet tall).

From the top of the bridge you can see many miles of salt marshes and waterways intricately weaved by nature.  Sidney Lanier wrote a famous poem about the beauty of these marshes:

This picnic area has it all.  It fails to mention that it has a beautiful sandy beach.

Sue on the beach (bikes are allowed as well as horses).
